In our monthly ‘Get to know’ series, we will introduce a different member of staff each month, to give our customers a look at the different roles in the Hub and the people that perform them.
This month, we would like to introduce Mandy Emery, our new Sustainability and Social Value Specialist.
What is your role at the Hub?
I have recently started a new role as Sustainability and Social Value Specialist, which is an exciting opportunity for me to develop our own Sustainability Strategy within the Hub, as well as support our member trusts in achieving their sustainability and net zero goals. My role also involves supporting my colleagues and our members in understanding, implementing, and monitoring social value in the community, ensuring that every pound spent by our trusts has a positive economic impact on the community.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?
The biggest challenge in my role is how quickly the procurement and NHS landscape can change. It is crucial to be able to adapt to rapidly changing legislation, and quickly learn and adapt to new acts, like the Procurement Act, which is coming into effect in October. Staying ahead of these changes requires continuous learning and flexibility, which keeps me on my toes but also makes my role interesting and engaging.
What do you find most rewarding about your role, or working in the NHS?
I joined the NHS because I wanted to feel more fulfilled in my career, and I knew that I could achieve that by working in the NHS. My role allows me to make real and tangible changes, and I find this incredibly rewarding. Seeing the direct impact of our sustainability initiatives on both the environment and the community gives me a profound sense of accomplishment.
What was your first job?
Apart from waitressing on weekends, my first “proper” job was as a Head Chef in a small coffee shop. I was only responsible for all the baking, though, so I’m not sure the title was entirely fitting! My spinach and feta quiche was a firm favourite with the customers.
Do you have any hobbies?
I have two children and two dogs, so you can usually find us out on a walk somewhere. We love being outdoors and try to get out in nature as much as possible. When I can find a spare moment, I love reading and watching true crime documentaries. I’m also passionate about cooking and often experiment with new recipes, much to my family’s delight (or sometimes dismay!).
What is your dream holiday?
I would absolutely love to visit Peru and see the Sacred Valley in the Andes Mountains, as well as Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca, where communities still live on small floating islands! I have always been fascinated by Peruvian culture. I have been fortunate enough to work with Peruvians in my past roles, and they are the loveliest people. Experiencing the rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes of Peru would be a dream come true.
