Briefly tell us about your role at the Collaborative Procurement Hub.
As Assistant Director of Operations, I lead a small team focused on ensuring our systems and data enable procurement teams to work effectively. Recently, we’ve enhanced our reporting tools to provide better market insight and automate customer onboarding. This will make it easier for organisations to access our frameworks while improving how we understand their usage.
Tell us about your career before joining the Collaborative Procurement Hub.
My background is in physics, and I began my career as a process engineer developing recordable compact discs, working internationally to install and optimise production lines and analyse process data.
I wanted to apply my analytical skills in a role with a clear social purpose, so when an NHS analyst opportunity arose, I made the move. It gave me the opportunity to support an organisation that makes a real difference.
You have been at the Hub for 18 years now. How would you describe your time here?
It’s been interesting to see how the Hub and wider NHS have evolved. I’ve always tried to make a quiet but strong impact, particularly by bringing people together from different backgrounds to deliver improvements.
One of the things I’m proud of is helping the Hub adopt cloud computing while it was in its infancy, laying the foundation for true ‘work anywhere’ capability and many of the digital improvements we’ve built on since. That shift helped position the Hub to adapt quickly as technology and ways of working continued to evolve.
[B]ig improvements come from people working together and being open to change.
What have you learned from your time at the Hub?
Technology moves fast and priorities can change quickly, so it’s important to stay adaptable and keep learning. I’ve also learned that big improvements come from people working together and being open to change.
What challenges keep you on your toes in your role?
Balancing stability with progress is a constant focus. Our systems and data must remain secure and reliable while continuing to evolve. Ensuring data is accurate and trusted is essential, as it supports informed decision-making. It’s also important to introduce new technologies carefully, focusing on solutions that genuinely help people and deliver long-term value.
What advice would you give to someone new to NHS procurement?
Build strong relationships, especially with people who have different skills and perspectives. Some of the best solutions come from collaboration. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and always look for opportunities to learn. The NHS is complex but rewarding, and curiosity and openness will help you grow and contribute effectively.
What does the NHS mean to you?
The NHS is something truly unique, and something we should all be proud of. The fact that people can access high-quality healthcare without fear of the cost is incredibly important. I’m proud to play even a small part in supporting an organisation that has an impact on people’s lives.
Outside of work, what helps you switch off and recharge?
I’m an early riser, often up before 5am, and enjoy running in the quiet of the early morning. I also hold a private pilot’s license and value the serenity, precision and perspective that flying brings. Outside of that, I enjoy astronomy, puzzle solving, collecting first edition books, making cocktails, long walks with my dog and spending time with my family. I’m also learning to read music and play the piano.
What is your dream holiday?
An exciting theme park adventure in Florida with my family or time in Italy enjoying the fabulous gelato and atmosphere. Both are very different, but both are equally appealing.
See what Darren’s colleagues have to say about working closely with him:
I’m really grateful to work with a manager who is consistently supportive and genuinely cares for those around him. Darren’s guidance and encouragement has meant that, as a team, we are able to tackle even the most challenging projects.
Gizem Michopoulos, Systems Process Lead at the Hub
Darren still displays the same enthusiastic attitude today that he did when I first started working with him seven years ago. He’s always available to bounce ideas off and combined with his knowledge of IT systems and a wide range of technical applications, he usually plays a key role in any project I’m assigned. Darren is consistently supportive of his team and genuinely cares about the people he works with, as well as delivering a first-class service to the NHS.
