From the NHS app to ambient AI – inclusion, access and outcomes
Interoperability First
Prioritise shared standards and a trajectory to a single patient record across settings. Align provider investment and incentives with conformance to reduce fragmentation and duplication.
Ambient AI and productivity
Evaluate AI-enabled scribe tools and automation against data security, clinical governance and measurable reductions in administrative workload. Use controlled pilots with clear benefits baselines and safety gates.
Digital transformation is not about apps—it is about equity, safety and measurable outcomes.
Inclusion and access
Design NHS App expansions and digital pathways with older and vulnerable groups in mind: accessible UX, assisted access models, digital literacy support, and non-digital alternatives where necessary.
Risks and mitigations
New complexity or inequity: run inclusion impact assessments and user testing with lived experience. Safety/regulatory gaps: align with national AI frameworks, IG policies and clinical oversight.
Practical actions
Create a Digital Outcomes Portfolio: map investments to MTPF trajectories with benefits realisation baselines and quarterly reviews. Establish a Digital Inclusion Partnership with VCSEs to support access and skills in neighbourhood hubs.
Interoperability is the difference between digital advantage and digital noise.
