Become Carbon Literate and learn how to make care more efficient, more sustainable and better for patients. This free, NHS-designed course shows how climate action supports high-quality care and offers practical steps you can take in your role.
Why take part
The NHS is on a major sustainability journey. This course helps you understand the connection between climate change and healthcare, and how environmental action improves patient outcomes. You will explore how the climate crisis is already affecting health, what the NHS is doing to cut emissions, and how you and your colleagues can support this work within your own department.
What the course includes
Developed by the Carbon Literacy Project in partnership with Greener NHS and e-Learning for Healthcare, the pathway brings together online learning and a live workshop.
You will complete:
- five short e-learning modules of 30 minutes each on the NHS Learning Hub
- a live, half-day online workshop delivered by Lighthouse Sustainability
The workshop uses video, group discussions and real examples from NHS settings. You will build the confidence and skills to reduce emissions at work and support long-term, sustainable change.
What you will gain
- understanding of the carbon impact of everyday decisions
- practical ways to embed climate action in your role
- connection with a growing network of more than 134,000 certified Carbon Literate colleagues
- an official certificate and footer logo from the Carbon Literacy Project
Who can join
The course is open to all NHS England colleagues with a valid NHS email address. It is especially suited to people who need a flexible learning option that works alongside clinical or non-clinical duties.
Learners must complete the e-learning before attending the workshop. To gain certification, you must complete both elements and submit an Evidence Form. Successful applicants receive a certificate and certified footer logo from the Carbon Literacy Project.
The course is fully funded for NHS England employees through Greener NHS.
If you cannot attend this session, further dates are available on Ticket Tailor.
