In this month’s feature we Get to know Alia Husain, NHS Procurement Graduate – Procurement Support and Commissioning.
What is your role at the Hub?
My role at the Hub as a Procurement Graduate is to support colleagues and lead on project work. I joined the Hub as part of the Pathways to Procurement Graduate scheme in 2023 and have gained experience in Pharmacy, Estates and now work more closely with the Corporate, Clinical and Regulation division.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?
I believe my biggest challenge within my role is getting to grips with all the regulations and legislative changes. When I started in 2023, it was an exciting time for public sector procurement with changes such as the provider selection regime, and a few years later – the Procurement Act. Alongside legislation, I think also being confident in my abilities to handle stakeholders and have difficult conversations is something I find challenging.
What do you find most rewarding about your role, or working in the NHS?
I used to work as a vaccinator during the pandemic, so I have seen a few sides to the NHS. The most rewarding thing that has stayed with me is the impact of the work you do. At the end of the week, you feel fulfilled as you have achieved something to help others.
What was your first job?
My first job was working in a dessert shop when I was 18 at university. I think I lasted about two weeks before leaving!
Tell us about your hobbies
I love going for walks in my spare time and you will always find me visiting a new coffee shop along the way. I also would love to give pottery a go!
What would your dream holiday be?
When I am on holiday, I love nothing more than to relax, so a trip to a white sandy beach would be lovely.
